Over the Rainbow

Why I choose these charities:

I randomly chose seven countries and seven children charities. I was not interested in helping big organisation, I wanted to help those small ones forgotten by everyone and struggling for resources. I left everything I had behind and started my incredible journey in Peru' followed by Bolivia, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico alone, often crapping my pants but curious and determined to help these kids.

How I planned to help:

My original plan was to teach these kids English and yoga for free, running educational projects supporting the academic, social and personal development of the children with the objective of providing them with better opportunities and a brighter future, raise awareness and funds for their education, health care and well being as most of these kids are affected by domestic violence, crime, malnutrition, poverty, mental and sexual abuse.

What we raised:

This project lasted over a year, funds were raised to paint their classrooms, repair some of the facilities and roof, to buy food, water, clothing, medical assistance, stationery, books, transportation, to settle utility bills, purchase of two goats (Milly & Molly) for the orphanage in Guatemala.

Achievements:

With the help of many volunteers, in each country we were able to provide free English classes, IT, maths, music and sport events to many kids and teenagers. A photography exhibition we organised in Rio de Janeiro with shots taken by the kids around their favela helped to raised funds to repair the roof of the center, we painted some of the centers in several countries, we raised funds by packing and selling our coffee beans, we bought 2 goats to provide milk for the little ones in the orphanage, we bought books, notebooks and stationery for the kids to learn how to write and read. Through the Lela De Silva Trust ,an English teacher of The Scots College in Sidney, Australia, went to Brazil for the World Cup and donated balls, football shirts, shoes to the Julio Otoni kids . We inspired more people to fly to South America and volunteer in some of these charities, raising funds back home and making personal donations. The biggest achievement is the happiness you get when you help others, you stop chasing happiness because you create it yourself. You automatically elevate your own life by lifting others.
